Woods and forests are very inspiring for many of us. How many writers have written about woodland… How many painters and illustrators have used it in creative and enchanting ways… It is also my favorite theme when I host people at my countryside home. You can play with so many elements that are easy to find: branches, pine cones, fruits, and vegetables.
There are no better seasons than autumn and winter to take time for yourself. Even though, ironically, this is such a busy time of year for me too. However, I try to wake up early, walk off the beaten track, relax, and listen to the wonderful hidden life around me. And when I’m exploring the nearby woods, why not forage a few evergreens at the same time, such as oak branches and moss?
Autumn is also the perfect time of year to set a table with a strong color palette. I like to make the table visually striking and bold, playing with textures, layers, and a variety of pumpkins. I also have special dishware featuring reindeer and lovely rustic napkins with woodland animals in different warm colors and patterns. I use candles as well—my favorites at this time of year are green and black, though here I’ve only used green ones, as they match the two-layered tablecloths.
I also like to incorporate multiple items: for instance, I place many candles of different sizes on the table, as they make the whole atmosphere feel more cozy and authentic.
Also, gather multiple branches in vases of various sizes. Alternatively, use different pumpkins, as they are seasonal vegetables and a perfect symbol of autumn. In other words, make a statement. The key is to mix elements on the table but keep one main focus—hydrangeas, apples, pears, pumpkins, grapes, etc.—to highlight autumn’s abundance, which will appear very charming to your guests.
